Barack Obama Wins Politico Straw Poll

Progressive political activists at Take Back America Conference slightly favor Illinois Sen. Barack Obama over former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards. Sen. Hillary Clinton comes in at a distant third, Politico reports.
Obama received 29% of the 720 votes cast in the straw poll, narrowly beating out ... Edwards, and decisively knocking official front-runner Hillary Clinton into third place.

Edwards took 26% of the vote and Clinton 17%.

Howling Latina is a bit surprised; she thought Edwards was the Golden Boy of the lefties. Maybe that business about Obama calling Clinton and Edwards out for their initial support of the war in Iraq made a dent on support for Edwards. Of course, Lil Hill has never been a favorite of the left.

But before we all start singing, "Good Night Irene" and declare Obama the new front-runner, we have to keep in mind that this was just a dumb straw poll nearly a year and a half before the presidential election.

Straw polls are unscientific indicators, and their results are determined in part by who chooses to participate.
Nonetheless, primary season is sneaking in, day by day, and before we know it, fun and postering will be over and the game begins for keeps.
