Hoyer Wins!

Howling Latina received breaking news e-mails from ABC News and MSNBC that House Democrats elected Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland to be their Majority Leader,in the next Congress.

Handing a bitter defeat to Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania who had the backing of soon-to-be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the House chose the steady hand of Hoyer over Murth'a firebrand polemics.

From HL's perch, Nancy Pelosi did the absolute right thing in backing Murtha. After all, Murtha was instrumental to her win over Hoyer as Minority Leader; and his public denouncement of Bush's war policies in late '05 paved the way for a Democratic majority.

On the other hand, Democrats were also smart in rejecting Murtha and electing Hoyer, especially with Murtha's publicly noted ethical lapses.

Even before Pelosi raises the gavel for the first time, no need to give ammunition to the other side; a problematic future situation was taken care of by House Democrats, whether Murtha was ever indicted for Abscam or not. A criminal indictment, after all, should not be the Democratic standard for a leadership post.

Take note, though. Pelosi's endorsement of Murtha was a clear warning shot across the "bowels of Congress" to signal to members that for her, loyalty is EVERYTHING. Cross her at one's peril.

Comments:
Good analysis, but I think the expression you were reaching for is "a warning shot across the bows."

Nope. Although the usual saying is "a warning shot across the bows," it's the bowels of Congress I decided to use in its place:)

Is she a Speaker or a Queen? What happened to the democratic part of the Democratic Party? Big tent or pup tent?

She's a leader who will lead. No more no less.
