Speaker Hastern Possibly Snagged in House Culture of Corruption?!?
In breaking news, ABC News via AMERICAblog and Raw Story has reported that House Speaker Dennis Hastert is being investigated by the FBI.
It seems information from a few of Jack Abramoff’s friends “implicated” the distinguished gentleman from Illinois.
Ohmygod, no wonder Hastert went ballistic when the government raided the congressional office of Rep. William Jefferson of Louisiana last Saturday; and poor Nancy Pelosi unwittingly fell for his so-called constitutional outrage.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives…is under investigation by the FBI, which is seeking to determine his role in an ongoing public corruption probe into members of Congress, ABC News has learned from high level government sources.
Part of the investigation involves a letter Hastert wrote three years ago, urging the Secretary of the Interior to block a casino on an Indian reservation that would have competed with other tribes.
Howling Latina wonders if the Justice Department under Bush's bestest pal is sending a J. Edgar Hoover-like warning to Congress. Hey, investigate me, and investigations are likely to turn up in the strangest places.
In rare, election-year harmony, House Republican and Democratic leaders jointly demanded on Wednesday that the FBI return documents taken in a Capitol Hill raid that has quickly grown into a constitutional turf fight beyond party politics.
"The Justice Department must immediately return the papers it unconstitutionally seized," House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a statement.
