Snug in thet Blanket

Howling Latina has had the overwhelming suspicion that the federal government has been eavesdropping on journalists all along; and now my darkest fear has been confirmed by ABC News.

ABC News today reports that a "senior federal law enforcement official t[old] ABC News the government is tracking the phone numbers" of two journalists, Brian Ross and Richard Esposito "in an effort to root out confidential sources."

Ain't America great! Now the White House is trashing the First Amendment!

Can we at long last see some righteous outrage from the media with this latest power grab by the Bush administration? The breaking news is just another example of White House shenanigans aimed to silence critics and whistleblowers who would unmask their most recent Big Lie, that no "regular citizen" needs to worry about the phone mining program; their civil liberties are safe and snug with this crowd.

But HL's ear, the hound dog that she is, perked up when she heard Bush defend the program by proclaiming that "regular" people didn't need to worry; for with those words, HL saw a loophole as wide as the space beween Bush's two ear lobes; in fact, wide enough to drive a fleet of his non-existent mobile tubes through it as well.

But what's alarming is that if King George can unitarily decide who is or is not an enemy combatant, with just the teeneest wee of leeway, he can surely decide that a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist does not fall under the "regular Joe" moniker and is eligible for special attention from his goons under Negroponte.

So when "[s]ources [tell journalists] that phone calls and contacts by reporters for ABC News, along with the New York Times and the Washington Post, are being examined as part of a widespread CIA leak investigation", folks it's time to be seriously worried; and seriously scared.
"It's time for you to get some new cell phones, quick," the source told [the journalists] is in an in-person conversation.
Yes, get new cell phones under an alias name, like yesterday!.

Wow a Southern Baptist Democrat. . . . I'll be checking your blog to hear what you think.

What I don't understand is why the American public hasn't marched on the White House to demand that George and Laura move out!

Does anyone think it is really backwards that Americans get more upset about photo red light cameras taking pictures of their cars running red lights (that is, actually BREAKING A LAW) than they do about the president's goons keeping track of their phone calls (99.99...% of which calls are made for entirely LEGAL purposes)?
