Amen, Brother Harry
Howling Latina didn't have to wait too long to learn that Democrats did indeed learn the bitter lessons from '04. Never give political enemies even one measly news cycle before responding to their baseless attacks.
Good ol' Harry.
Waiting for me after lunch was an e-mail from the venerable Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid to alert me of the disgraceful manner Republicans from Bush to Lieberman were spinning the foiled plot to verbally whack the Democrats.
He writes: "GOP leaders are using terrorism and our national security as a political wedge issue. It is disgusting - but not surprising."
Of course not. They've been using the fear factor since 9/11; only the unequivocal rebuke by voters in November will stop their shameless demagoguing.
Amen, brother Harry; the exact point of my earlier post. Cheney and his minions coordinated a PR stunt at the expense of nation and democracy. This week, after Ned Lamont won the Connecticut Democratic primary, Dick Cheney said his victory would embolden "al-Qaeda types." Is this the type of country we're going to live in? Where the Vice President of the United States can blatantly suggest that Connecticut voters are aiding the terrorists?
Even more disgraceful is that when Cheney made those comments, he had been briefed on the Britain terror plot. There are simply no boundaries for these people. In their minds, our national security and their continued hold on power are one and
the same. And they will stop at nothing to keep it that way.
Reid continues:
And how do you tell Republicans? By letting your vote do the talking; and observing that if GOPers brag about our safety, don't buy into their lies, we're not safer but less so.During the 2002 and 2004 elections, Republicans tried to sow fear in the American public by claiming that they were the only ones who could keep America safe. This, from the same crowd that has driven Iraq to the brink of disaster, left Osama Bin Laden on the loose to attack again, and continues to ignore our security needs at home. Ask any foreign policy pro, and they'll tell you we're less safe now than we were five years ago - and that the Bush crowd is largely responsible.
I've had it. This cruel joke has gone on for too long. Tell Republicans in Washington that you won't put up with their fear-mongering any longer.
Margaret Carlson in an op-ed with Bloomberg.com notes that in a recent "survey published this month...100 foreign policy experts, retired military officers, veteran intelligence officers, former secretaries of state and national security advisers...across political lines" concluded that the world is less safe today than before 9/11.
Moreover, it looks like the Dem pushback just might be working.
In a story lede today by the Agence France-Presse via Yahoo! News, the reporter writes that President Bush "seized [the] foiled London airline bomb plot to hammer unnamed critics...of having all but forgotten the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks."
And we know who the critics are, don't we? The naysayers at home who give comfort to the enemy, of course.
Who us? Why, perish the thought and hush your puppies.Vice President Dick Cheney and White House spokesman Tony Snow had argued that Democrats wanted to raise what Snow called "a white flag in the war on terror," citing as evidence the defeat of a three-term Democratic senator who backed the Iraq war in his effort to win renomination.
But Bush aides on Thursday fought the notion that they had exploited their knowledge of the coming British raid to hit Democrats, saying the trigger had been the defeat of Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut by an anti-war political novice.
