Music to My Democratic Ears

The Democrats are poised to win the House in the fall; and the media is finally taking voters and the party seriously.

The Washington Post has a front-page story in tomorrow’s paper with quotes from Democratic leaders about plans for their take-over.

Yippee! First item out of the chute, Cheney’s secret energy meetings right after the 2000 election. This is the embryonic cell that gave birth to Bush's war in Iraq.

Did Cheney meet with oil executives and tell them about secret plans to invade Iraq?!? I mean, what was so damn damaging that Cheney had to go all the way to the Supreme Court to prevent Americans from finding out?!?

Next, a rollback in run-away GOP spending and a bill to raise the minimum wage for workers; and for good measure, a little accountability about the run-up to Iraq and the one-sided intelligence used wrecklessly to preemptively start a war.

Democratic leaders, increasingly confident they will seize control of the House in November, are laying plans for a legislative blitz during their first week in power that would raise the minimum wage, roll back parts of the Republican prescription drug law, implement homeland security measures and reinstate lapsed budget deficit controls.

[…]

Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report, said his most expansive estimate classifies 52 seats as "unsafe," 40 of them Republican, 12 of them Democratic. But, he said, only a tidal wave would dislodge the incumbent party from many of
those seats, and more realistically, 30 Republican seats and five Democratic districts are vulnerable.

To paraphrase our hero, Steve Colbert, let’s see you try to spin that one, Fox.

Oh, that’s right. A Democratic House is the best thing that could happen to the GOP, because, well, because that’s their best talking point.

I found this on Waldo's Blog Aggregator!!!

Please Please Please --

Make this the focus of the November Election.

Top three issues:
1) rehashing the past
2) raising the Minimum Wage
3) revamping the prescription drug program just as seniors are signed up and using it.
4) Raising Taxes (you certainly don't think democrats are going to cut spending, do you?)

If you could further expand item 1 to make it clear you intend to tie the executive branch in knots over the next to years, ensuring we can't successfully engage in the war on terror, that would be wonderful.

As to why meetings were secret. Sometimes, when people say that they are upholding a principle, that's really all they are doing. The executive has the right to consult without revealing the results to congress -- just as the executive can't simply ask to see all the staff memo's sent to democratic congresspeople.

It's about ACCOUNTABILITY. And one of the guys who led the GOP takeover in 1992, Dick Armey, is quoted in the Post story as admitting the Democratic Party has a pretty darn good little plan to win in November.
